EXTRA: WELCOME FEBRUARY EDITION

Ken's House of Pancakes is one of the 10 best places to start your day according to USA Today.

Located on the Big Island of Hawai'i in Hilo town on the corner of Kamehameha Avenue and Kanoelehua, Ken's House of Pancakes is a genuine local establishment.  The restaurant was established in 1971.  Open 24 hours a day and almost 365 days a year, it is the only place to go for just about any kine food besides pancakes.

From the USA Today article:

Now here's an eye-opener: January is "Resolve to Eat Breakfast Month." So, before the month is out, we asked Eddy Chavey, food historian, breakfast expert and creator of a website dedicated to his passion for the most important meal of the day (mrbreakfast.com), to share his favorite places with Kathy Baruffi for USA TODAY.

Ken's House of Pancakes

Hilo, Hawaii

"Open 24 hours a day, Ken's is very popular among breakfast lovers on the Big Island of Hawaii. The menu features multiple variations of a signature Hawaiian dish called Loco Moco, a beef patty, gravy and an egg over rice. If you order the largest version, called the Sumo Moco, the staff will all yell 'Sumo!' " Chavey says. "Also try the homemade coconut syrup on their Hawaiian-style pancakes."

They got traditional Maple and Lilikoi syrup also!

Ken's has an extensive menu ranging from Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.  Local food favorites are found here as well as continental and American favorites.  The coffee is definably local Kona brewed served hot in Ken's own special mugs.  The wait staff is friendly and fast with serving your food.  Best of all is the price.  Not much of a bite on the wallet.

Along the wall by the cashier are photos of local and international celebrities.  Located near Banyan drive where the hotels are, the visitors are encouraged to go for breakfast or a late night snack.

It looks like a diner in anywhere U.S.A. but with one distinct difference.
It's Hawaiian!

The moment you enter the restaurant you immediately hear the sweet  sounds of classic Hawaiian music wafting in the air along with the smell of delicious food being served up.  A smiling greeter escorts you to a waiting booth followed by a server to take your order.  The atmosphere is definitely friendly and casual.  I recommend the Crab Cake Eggs Benedict - Ahhh, broke da mouth!

The parking lot is small and usually full.  Sometimes I've had to drive around town and come back and look for a spot to park.  But it's well worth the wait.

From the Hawai'i Tribune-Herald:
Topping the specials of the day were a steak burrito and mahi with papaya salsa. Hawaiian music and oldies played in the background. Customers were warmly greeted by the hostess who was wearing a Hawaiian print uniform. Friends hugged and greeted one another in the restaurant's lobby.

A man, walking in out of the rain with bare feet, stopped to slip on his sandals before entering the establishment while cars waited for parking in the large puddle that was once the parking lot.

Ric Maiava and Debbie Maiava, general managers for the restaurant, said they were both surprised by the USA Today mention.

Ho'omaika'i 'ana!
General Managers Ric and Debbie Maiava hold a copy of the recent USA Today article that listed Ken's House of Pancakes among "10 Great Places to Start Your Day Sunny Side Up" throughout the United States.

In other news, it's been chilly this week.  The temperatures have not gotten above 75 degrees.  Now I know that might not seem chilly to some, but we've had a low pressure system over the islands that have brought dryer cooler air.  That has lowered the dew point and the humidity making it feel chilly.  Giving me chicken skin.

Bone Chilling Cold

A Full Moon and gathering clouds means rain is on the way.

So, What's for Dinner?

Chilly night calls for a nice bowl Spicy Hot Chili with Sourdough Bread.
